Being with physical pain

Being with physical pain

Types of pain

There are four primary types of pain each having their own flavor of expression. Physical pain is the most obvious being that of the production of unpleasant sensations in the the body.  It often deeply activates our survival mechanisms and more primitive, reactive brain structures.  Emotional pain is experienced when our feelings get hurt or we feel unloved or unloveable.  This is less connected with our immediate survival and more with our sense of a personal self and inherent worthiness.  Mental pain is the experience we have when we’re trying to force or insist that life to be a particular way,  when we argue with what is and can’t see outside of a limited perspective.  This is often connected with who we are in the world, what we want to accomplish and how we are perceived by others.  Lastly spiritual pain is that which we feel when we tap into the collective at large and feel the suffering of a group or community.  Spiritual pain is the least personal of all the experiences of pain, but it tends to invoke a high desire towards service towards others when felt.

Though none of the pains that we experience are necessarily easy to be with I find that physical pain can sometimes be the most challenging for us. Our relationship with physical pain is such that we feel the threat to our survival through its expression.  Most of us have subtle, or not so subtle, beliefs in place that to allow ourselves to feel physical pain may ensue our demise. Even if our higher brain centers know this is not necessarily the case, the lower primitive survival structures take precedence and rule our reactions.

Due to the perceived threat to our survival that physical pain activates inside of our psyche we have a higher tendency to protect or guard ourselves from this type of pain.  This creates a hyper-vigilance which activates our sympathetic (fight/flight) nervous system, creates massive amounts of tension and hijacks our awareness.  In this state of being our capacity to recognize that we are not the pain and that the pain does not control us is quite limited.  We feel consumed by it and have lost awareness of anything else.

Mastering the primitive nervous system

Coming back into connection with yourself

separated by wallUltimately we must become the master of this primitive survival response of our nervous system so that we can learn to be present with physical pain rather than consumed by it.  When we guard against physical pain we wall off our awareness from  that particular location within our body.  Walling off awareness creates a sense of disconnection from that expression.  When we perceive disconnection we feel powerless because the expression is something other than us. When something seems other than us the mind perceives it to be an external problem and often goes into trying to figure out the solution to that problem. This is a rabbit hole without resolve. You will constantly be looking for and trying the next best magical cure.

When instead you begin to create a connection with this aspect of your self that’s expressing as a painful sensation you begin to realize your power again.  You realize that you can be with this expression too. That you can even move into and towards it rather than away from it.  That you don’t have to protect yourself from it, but rather that you can experience it.

It is through this and through realizing your power and thus your capacity to work with these sensations that you can come back into oneness with yourself and with that which was previously perceived to be other than you.  This is how all healing happens in every category of pain.  In this way you begin to master those primitive survival responses of your nervous system.  Rather than letting them run the show of your life you develop greater awareness of your self beyond them and with that new options for how you can engage with these painful sensations begins to open up.  With that you stop seeing pain as the enemy that’s overtaking you and you discover how you can work with whatever sensation arises.  In this working together communication happens.  Vital communication.  Communication that is required for all systems to function and work coherently towards a common vision, in this case a physical vehicle that moves with ease.

All healing happens through connection and coming back into oneness with yourself.  When we forget our wholeness we appear to ourselves to be broken. From the perception of brokenness no healing arises, only further brokenness.  To join with what’s present (even physical pain), rather wall yourself off from it, creates balance, harmony and an optimal environment for you to thrive within.

Disconnection is the only disease

Disconnection is the only disease

Physical, emotional and mental aspects of disease

35721266 - doctor and patient woman. We live in a time where everyone is trying to discover the cause of their disease.  Billions of dollars, time, energy and resources are spent on finding cures.  Most people look for a physical (or physiological) cause to whatever ailment effects them.  They search for some biochemical process that is not working properly and then determine that that must be the cause of their disease.

This basic process of searching, which nearly every person does who has something that afflicts them, takes into account only the physical manifestation of a nonphysical process.  It assumes that you are your body so in order to “fix you” you must repair the body.  Warning, news flash ahead!  Despite what you have been told by probably everyone YOU ARE NOT YOUR BODY.  You are instead that which makes your body come alive, which animates and enlivens it.  That nonphysical aspect, which is you, is what runs the show.  It is that which influences and informs the physical body expression, which you call you.

Now some people have more awareness and realize that their emotions and thoughts (some less physical aspects of self) also influence their body.  This is a start in the right direction.  Being able to find and feel your emotions is quite liberating for the health of your physical body.  Investigating habitual thought patterns and discovering how your body responds to them is beneficial and healing as well.  However this is still only a few pieces of the pie.  To really reveal the entire picture we must dive into disconnection from your true self.

Epidemic of disconnection

Who/what are you really?

You are not your body, your emotions, or your thoughts.  All of those aspects are included in “you” but none of them are who you are.  Think about this for a second.  The body, feelings, and thoughts all come and go.  That which comes and goes can never be who you are, because you still remain despite them.  You can observe your body, emotions and thoughts, and therefore that which you observe can never be who you are.  Its like observing a table and saying you are that table.  No, you are the one observing the table, not the table itself.  The identification with the expression instead of that which expresses, or said another way identification with  the observed, instead of the observer, is the birth of disconnection.

9517027 - three white and black electrical plugs into white outlet on the whitePretty much everyone experiences some level of disconnection from who/what they really are.  When you are disconnected from something that means your ability to function is impaired (aka disease).  You’ve got some parts and pieces, but not the essence of what is needed.  Think of a lamp.  If the cord is disconnected from the wall outlet (its source) then it will never function as well as its meant too.  It may look pretty (which is nice), but thats about it.  We want our bodies to do more than look pretty, we want them to be lit up, alive and functioning.  When we connect more fully to our true nature (our source) organically our bodies health, we feel our emotions and our thoughts become clearer.

Network Care assists the reconnection process.  Through unwinding tension patterns in your body-being you begin to reduce the amount of interference (or disconnection) in your system.  As this unwinding occurs in level 1 and 2 of care your awareness simultaneously expands from beyond being your body, your emotions or your thoughts.  You realize you are more, and as care continues you access awareness beyond thoughts.  This is called soul level intelligence.  When this level of awareness is reconnected too you experience love, gratitude and awe as who you are.  You realize your already whole state.  Personal healing losses meaning here as you are less a person and experience yourself as energy or light.  This is the consciousness of stage 9 in SRI and level 3A/B of Network Spinal Analysis.  With each taste of this your system integrates and creates the “space” for this level of awareness to become your new baseline.  The knowing from where “you” are aware and realize yourself as awareness.

Un-fear yourself!

Un-fear yourself

A look at your beliefs

43947471 - fear.If you are human you have experienced fear.  Fear is simply the belief that things are not working or going to work out for you.  It comes with the thoughts that you will be hurt, won’t be taken care of or loved, that you are on your own, separate and isolated.  Fun times🎉, not.

The addiction to believing that things aren’t working out for you is strong and it literally destroys life. Patterns get deeply engrained in your nervous system and cascades of chemicals, like adrenaline and cortisol, get released into your blood stream when you have thoughts that say “things aren’t working out”.  This sets up withdrawal symptoms when you start questioning your fear based thoughts. Who would you be if you believed every situation was working out for you? Crazy? Delusional? Psychotic?  These are the labels we’ve learn to give people who see the light in every situation.

The emotional-chemical cascade will do its best to hijack your system so you continue to feel separate, unsupported, empty and not cared for, as this is what has been the norm for most people’s lives to varying to degrees. This is “comfortable” in that it’s known, and what is known feels more safe than the unknown, even if the unknown is more true.

Life is always working for you

Shifting perspectives

42024392 - child, excitement, ecstatic.Fear and excitement are the same energy, simply viewed through different lenses. To un-fear yourself you must see how everything is working for you. How the relationship that just ended is working for you. How getting fired is working for you. How the painful sensation in your body is working for you. How your current income and resources are working for you.

This reframes your thinking from a lack-based perspective to a presence-based perspective. It’s much more fun to be in presence than it is lack. There is excitement for the unknown possibilities that are emerging based on your belief that everything is working for you, instead of worry for the unknown possibilities that are emerging based on the belief that things aren’t working out for you.

The catch is you must change your perspective before it will be reflected differently in your life. You can’t wait for your perfect life circumstances to magically arrive and then decide to see that life is working for you. If you attempt to do this, then even when you have achieved your ideal life you will not see it. You will be unable to perceive it because you haven’t shifted your underlying belief from lack to presence

You must see how life is already working for you now despite whatever circumstance you are experiencing. Then as life continues to unfold you will see the perfection of it because you have already changed your belief to align with it.  These patterns are underlying in most people’s nervous systems and sabotage our desires & dreams often silently without us even knowing they are there. They are masters of deception and require commitment, persistence and dedication to bring them to light for the ultimate goal of shifting from fear silently controlling your life, to living your life based in freedom.
