Becoming More Present in Your Body
We spend much of our lives experiencing the world through our thoughts. We are constantly thinking about what happened, anticipating what might happen, making decisions and moving from one thing to the next. In the process, it can be easy to lose touch with the experience of actually being in your body. Somatic awareness is the practice of bringing your attention back to what you are sensing, feeling and experiencing in the present moment.
Your body is constantly communicating through sensation, movement, breath and subtle shifts in energy. Becoming more aware of these signals can deepen your understanding of yourself in ways that thinking alone cannot. As awareness grows, you begin to recognize what feels nourishing or depleting, where you are holding tension and what your body is inviting you to notice.

What is Somatic Awareness?
Somatic awareness is the ability to sense and stay connected to what is happening within your body in the present moment. It is more than knowing what your body is doing intellectually. It is developing a direct, felt relationship with your internal experience.
You may begin to notice subtle sensations, changes in your breathing, shifts in muscle tension, impulses to move or become still or emotional responses that arise before you have words for them. With practice these signals become easier to recognize and understand.
Somatic awareness is not about constantly monitoring yourself or trying to interpret every sensation. It is about becoming curious and present enough to notice what is happening without immediately needing to change it. Over time, this creates a deeper sense of connection with your body and a greater ability to recognize what you are experiencing as it unfolds.
From Thinking to Feeling
We can know something intellectually and still have a very different experience of it in our body. You may know that you are safe, while noticing that your body remains tense or guarded. You may understand that you need rest while continuing to feel an impulse to keep going. You may recognize that something is important to you while noticing a sense of contraction, resistance or unease when you move toward it.
The body communicates through subtle shifts in energy, breath and movement. These signals are often present before we have words to describe what we are experiencing.
Developing somatic awareness gives you an opportunity to listen to these signals without immediately trying to explain, judge or change them. Over time, you begin to recognize your own patterns and become more familiar with the language of your body. This can reveal information that often is not available through thinking alone.

Bringing Somatic Awareness into Everyday Life
Somatic awareness becomes most meaningful when it begins to inform how you live. As you become more connected to your body, you may notice how you respond to relationships, decisions, boundaries, work, rest and the demands of everyday life. With this awareness more options for response become available to you. .
Network Spinal and NeuroSomatic coaching extends this awareness beyond the table. Together, we explore how what you notice in your body relates to the way you move through your life, creating more opportunities to recognize your patterns and respond with greater awareness and choice.
